A Dubai villa with coordinated lighting and floor-to-ceiling curtains

There is no single answer for every smart home. Some physical controls and locally hosted routines may continue, while away-from-home access and cloud services may stop. The useful question is what happens in your specified design.

Distinguish three interruptions

An internet outage, a failed home router and a power cut are different events. A function that does not need an outside connection may still need power, a controller or the local network. Ask the installer to explain those dependencies in plain language.

Do not accept a general offline claim as proof that every routine and interface keeps working.

List the functions that matter

For each room, record the physical controls, automatic routines, phone controls and remote access you expect. Ask which can run locally and which depend on an external service. Include voice assistants and third-party integrations separately.

The Connectivity Standards Alliance describes Matter as a local connectivity technology. Away-from-home control for Matter-only devices requires an internet-connected controller at home. That does not establish the behaviour of every product feature or integration.

Test the agreed scenarios

At handover, ask the installer to demonstrate the expected response to a temporary loss of internet and a safe restart. The professional should plan any power-related test. Record what stops, what continues and how service recovers.

  • Can essential lighting be operated physically?
  • Can occupants adjust the AC using the agreed controls?
  • Do specified schedules continue?
  • What happens to alerts and remote access?
  • Is any manual recovery step required?

Keep the recovery instructions

A concise handover record should identify equipment, owner access, support contacts and the agreed recovery process. Avoid sharing device passwords or detailed access information through public forms or analytics tools.

If someone later replaces a router or changes the network, ask whether the automation setup needs adjustment. Make support responsibility part of the original proposal.

Choose reliability you can demonstrate

Request evidence for the functions you need, not a universal promise. Our villa automation service puts these questions into the brief before installation. The quote checklist helps capture the answers in writing.
